How they operate

They want to leave the meeting having promised nothing while everyone feels heard. Every request gets a warm, polished reply: great point, let's explore that, let me bring it back to the team. There are no lies in it, and no commitments either. It works because it feels like agreement. You leave feeling supported, and only later notice that nobody owns the task, there is no date, and nothing has changed. Pushing back feels awkward when someone has been so pleasant to you.

What it sounds like

What works

They fear being on the record: a named owner, a date and a deliverable, said out loud where it can be repeated back later. Thank them for the support, then ask for exactly those three things. When they answer with more warmth, accept the warmth and repeat the question. Offer two concrete options if that helps them choose. Once they commit, say the commitment back in plain words so both of you heard the same thing. Then confirm it in writing.

You sayThanks, I appreciate that. Who will own this, and can we agree on a first draft by Friday?

What backfires

Matching their vagueness gets you more of it. Getting irritated or sarcastic gives them a reason to suggest discussing it later, somewhere else. Accepting "let's revisit this" as progress leaves you with nothing. Asking for many things at once lets them answer the easiest one warmly and skip the rest. Ask for one owner, one date, one deliverable.
