How they operate

The Hard Bargainer wants to close today on their number, and to leave you believing no other number existed. They are not being cruel. This is a negotiation, and they are good at it. They anchor early, state the figure once, set a deadline, and let silence do the rest. It works because most people dislike silence and fear losing the deal, so they fill the pause with a concession. If you arrive without a figure of your own, you end up bargaining against yourself.

What it sounds like

What works

They give ground to someone prepared: a clear number, a reason for it, and a walkaway point you are truly willing to use. Decide that point before the talk, not during it. State your figure once, calmly, then let the silence sit with them. When the deadline pressure comes, repeat your terms without adding new ones. If they hold, be ready to leave politely. Once they believe you will walk, a fair middle often appears, because a deal signed today is worth more to them than a perfect number nobody signs.

You sayMy number is 4,000, based on what this costs elsewhere. If we can't get close to that, I'll leave it, and that's fine with me.

What backfires

Arriving without a figure lets their anchor set the range. Filling every silence with a better offer teaches them that waiting pays. Saying you will walk and then staying makes every later limit worthless. Getting emotional or calling them unfair does not move them; to them the pressure is procedure, not personal.
