How they operate

They want their version of events to become the agreed truth. When you raise something that happened, they deny it, say you are remembering it wrong, or turn your concern into proof that you are too sensitive. They sound hurt by your accusation, which makes you feel unfair for raising it. It works because the topic quietly changes. You came to talk about an event, and now you are arguing about your own reliability, and every extra defense makes you look less sure of yourself.

What it sounds like

What works

Specific facts, stated calmly, are what they cannot dismiss. Name the date, the message, the exact words, and say it in a level voice. You do not need them to agree that your memory is good. Point to the record and move to what happens next. When they deflect, return to the same fact without raising your voice or adding emotion, and repeat it across several turns if needed. Put agreements in writing as you go. A steady fact gives their denial nothing to push against.

You sayYour message on the 12th says you would send it Friday. I'm not going to argue about memory. When can I have it?

What backfires

Arguing about your memory makes it worse, because that is the argument they want. Getting emotional lets them call it a matter of feelings. Long explanations, many examples at once, or calling them a liar give them more to deny and a reason to sound wounded. Apologizing to calm things down lets their version stand.
