How they operate

They want to see and approve every decision you make. Underneath the questions is anxiety: if they check everything, nothing can go wrong. So they ask you to walk them through it again, ask whether you double-checked, and raise rare cases you had not considered. It works because each question sounds reasonable on its own. You answer one, then the next, and soon you are defending your competence instead of doing the work, which makes them more nervous, not less.

What it sounds like

What works

They relax when you answer their questions before they ask them. Come in with the plan, the risks you checked, what you will do if something goes wrong, and when they will hear from you next. Offer specific points where they can see progress, so they do not need to check everything. When they ask something new, answer it calmly and briefly, and add it to the plan. Keep this up for several turns and the questions slow down, because each answer shows them the work is covered.

You sayI checked the numbers twice and tested the two risky cases. I'll send the draft Thursday morning and an update Friday at noon.

What backfires

Defensiveness makes it worse. Telling them to trust you, sighing at a repeated question, or saying you have it under control without showing how: each of these feeds the anxiety, so they check harder. Vague answers invite more questions. Giving up and handing every decision back to them confirms that they need to control it.
