Practice against this opponentHow they operate
They care about you, and that is the problem. They are afraid an honest no will damage the relationship, so they never give one. Instead you get warm, vague promises: soon, let me check, we'll figure it out. They want to keep things friendly without ever saying the hard answer. It works because they are so pleasant about it. Pushing feels unkind, and each soft delay sounds almost like a yes. Weeks later you still have no answer, and asking again makes you feel like the difficult one.
What it sounds like
Yeah, totally, we should talk about that. This week is insane, though.
Don't hate me, but can we do this some other time?
It's not a no! It's not a right-now yes, that's all.
What works
They fear a line held kindly that does not move: you stay warm, repeat the ask, and do not fill the silence for them. Tell them the relationship is safe either way, then ask for a clear yes or no and a date. When they change the subject, return to the same question in the same friendly tone. After you ask, stop talking and wait. Silence is uncomfortable, and they are used to someone rescuing them from it. Do not rescue them. Make it clear that an honest no is welcome.
You sayWe're fine either way, I promise. I need a real answer, though: will you help me move on Saturday, yes or no?
What backfires
Getting angry confirms their fear that honesty costs the relationship, so they hide further. Filling the pause with excuses on their behalf, like "I know you're busy," lets them off again. Accepting "soon" as an answer starts the whole cycle over. Turning it into a lecture about their habits makes them apologetic and defensive, and you still have no answer.
